I usually introduce gesture/figure drawing in Art II. In Art III and IV, I continue to use gesture/figure drawing exercises in the classroom. I usually have students draw with graphite sticks or vine charcoal. This past semester, my student teacher, Miss Markakis, taught a figure drawing lesson using India ink. Students make quick gestures in ink. They then created a palette of ink tones with water. They went back into the gestures and added details with varying tones of ink. I love the results! The work looks great and definitely worthy of including in their college portfolios. This is a lesson I will be sure to do again.
