The Cupboard Under the Stairs

We are embarking on a new journey here in CMS311.  A local kindergarten student in one of our elementary schools was recently diagnosed with leukemia.  When our students found out, they asked how we as a school community could help.  My National Honor Society students quickly decided to adopt this student's family as their service project.  We joined forces with the students in the National Junior Honor Society in our middle school.  The other advisors and I invited a guest speaker.  The guest was a nurse from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.  Her son had also battled cancer as a young child.  Some of the things she had to say were inspiring and became the catalyst for our new project.  We also asked the boy's mom what her son was into and what he liked.  Her first answer was that he had recently seen the Harry Potter movies and loved them.  We ran with the Harry Potter idea and the idea of "Owl Posts" was born.  Every day, we sent Nate a letter and or drawing.  The envelopes are decorated in the style of Harry Potter Owl Posts.  On Fridays, we send a small gift for Nate to open during his treatments.  Needless to say, Nate was thrilled to receive his first "Owl Post".
