Techniques of the Week

At CHS, we have an elective class, Mixed Media.  There is no prerequisite for the course, and the focus is on techniques and processes.  In most of the other art courses, students have some sort of journal in which they complete weekely assignments (sketchbooks, altered books, artist journals).  We were looking for a weekly assignment for Mixed Media and came up with a "technique of the week" assignment.  Each Monday, students are introduced to a new mixed media technique.  The directions and materials stay in the classroom on a back table for the entire week.  Each student was given a book ring with 10 3x4" book board cards on the ring.  Since there are 2 sides to each card, each student has 20 surfaces to work with, one for each week of the semester.  They were given the task of gessoing each card (front and back) and applying a coat of paint on each color so they have a background to work with.  For the last week of the semester, students had to add something to each card and hand in the entire ring for their midterm exam grade.  Some of the weekly techniques included decoupage, tape transfer, plaster relief, sewing, ink blots, painting with chalk, monoprinting, gloss and crayon resist, embossed plumber's tape, woodblock printing, encaustic, etc.  Below are some of the results:
